Local SEO Checklist for Canadian Service Businesses (2026)
A step-by-step local SEO checklist for Canadian service businesses — Google Business Profile, on-page SEO, reviews, and citations that actually rank.
If you serve a specific city or region, local SEO is the highest-ROI marketing you can do. Here's the checklist we use for every Canadian service business we work with.
1. Google Business Profile
- Claim and verify your listing
- Use your exact business name (no keyword stuffing)
- Add primary + secondary categories
- Set your service area (all cities you cover)
- Upload 10+ real photos
- Fill out services with descriptions and pricing
- Post updates weekly
2. On-page SEO for your website
- Unique title tag per page (<60 characters)
- Unique meta description per page (<160 characters)
- One H1 per page with your core keyword
- City / neighbourhood mentioned naturally in copy
- Schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage)
- Fast load times (Core Web Vitals green)
- Mobile-first responsive design
3. Service + location landing pages
If you offer 5 services in 3 cities, that's up to 15 potential landing pages. Don't spam — build the ones that match real search demand, with real, useful content.
4. Reviews
- Aim for 40+ Google reviews with 4.7+ average
- Ask every happy customer, every time — automated SMS works
- Respond to every review, positive and negative
- Sprinkle reviews across HomeStars, Yelp, Facebook, industry-specific sites
5. Citations + NAP consistency
Your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) must match exactly everywhere they appear — website, Google, Yelp, HomeStars, Facebook, industry directories. Inconsistency hurts rankings.
6. Backlinks that matter locally
- Local chamber of commerce
- Local news / blogs
- Industry associations (CFIB, BBB, HomeStars, etc.)
- Sponsorship pages of local charities or sports teams
- Guest posts on Canadian industry blogs
7. Track and adjust
Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics from day one. Check monthly. If you're not measuring, you're guessing.
